I’ve watched the first season of Game of Thrones, and I’m honestly pretty impressed by all the ladies.

But I want to talk about Dany and Sansa. Both of them start off incredibly similar. They are very young girls from important families that have been raised to believe in the nobility of their lives, asked to play into the perfect princess role. They look young, and frail, both seem totally at the mercy of the world around them.

Poor Sansa honestly believes in the whole prince/princess gambit. Her story, at least in season 1, is how those naive notions about romance and chivalry that women are taught are really, really, really bullshit. And yet, Sansa has been strong enough to survive. I know everyone loves looking to her sister from bad-assery, but I think there’s something really noble in Sansa being able to keep it together, and keep alive in the face of all that has happened to her. She has courage and strength.

Dany is a badass to the nth degree. She has the epic love story that only strengthens her as a character, which is cool. Dany’s story is really about finding agency in a world that tries to rob it from you, and winning. She becomes a leader, she learns to stand up to her dick of a brother. She stops being the delicate bruising flower, and becomes a fucking dragon.

I don’t know much about the series as a whole yet, but these two ladies have already impressed me.
