Ah, a movie from my childhood.
Kiki’s Delivery service is great because it’s just…simple. Simple and wonderful and full of interesting women. There’s the artist in the woods, the kind grandmother, the pregnant shopkeeper, the snooty girl witch. And Kiki. Of course Kiki.
This movie is great because all of the agency in the movie stems from women. Women are THE active shaping force for every part of the plot.
And at its heart, it’s the story about a young girl who finds herself. What she’s good at, what she wants to do, how to make friends, how to be herself and how to be a hero. It’s an inversion of the “witches” are bad idea, that women with power are GOOD, are AWESOME, are KICK ASS. It’s a movie about Kiki, sweet, funny, goofy Kiki, learning to be an empowered young woman.
